A 13 year old girl is a "Sexual Predator" because she was sexually assaulted.

Posted on 05:04 by Unknown
This is the point we have arrived at: a 13 year old child is sexually assaulted by an adult male and the judge and prosecutor both hold the child responsible for being sexually assaulted. According to Court New UK, the judge labelled the child a "sexual predator" who "egged on" her abuser. Neil Wilson, who is 41 years old, pled guilty and received a suspended sentence despite sexually assaulting a child and being found in possession of extreme pornographic images depicting both child sexual abuse and bestiality.

A 41 year old man gets a suspended sentence for assaulting a child and she gets labelled a sexual predator.

Anyone who doubts there is a war on women in our culture is suffering from a terminal case of cognitive dissonance.

Everyday Victim Blaming have started a petition here. Below is the text:
Yesterday, a man walked free from Snaresbrook Crown Court despite pleading guilty to ‘sexual activity with a child’ after the prosecutor Robert Colover and judge Nigel Peters described the thirteen year-old victim as a “sexual predator”.
I'm a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I could have been that 13 year old girl who the judge and prosecutor descrbed as 'predatory'. Now, I work with other women who have survived similar experiences. I have seen first hand how this kind of victim blaming prevents women from coming forward and protects men who commit these crimes.
It’s unacceptable that the Crown Prosecutor - the person who this young girl was relying on to help get her justice - used this kind of language in court. It’s a sad fact that this kind of attitude is commonplace within society and the legal establishment. We need to make a stand and send a clear message: It’s never the child’s fault.
I’m calling on the Crown Prosecution Service to look at the language used by Robert Colover and meet urgently with our organisation and other groups working with victims of rape and sexual assault to ensure this never happens again.
Please sign and share this petition. We need to stand up and protect our children from the violent sexual predators who abuse them and the men support sexual predators by minimising personal responsibility.

If you think a 13 year old child is somehow responsible for their sexual abuse, then you are as guilty as the men who perpetrated the violence. You help support a rape culture which dehumanises women and children. You help make it easier for children and women to be sexually abused.

This case doesn't just demonstrate the guilt of Neil Wilson. It demonstrates the complicity of the Crown Prosecution Services and the judge in the continuing sexual abuse of the child.

You can make a formal complaint about the low crown court sentence here and a formal judicial complaint here.

POSTSCRIPT: Since i wrote this piece, the Attorney General has agreed to review this case for an unduly lenient sentence. The CPS has also announced that they will not be using this particular prosecuting attorney for any cases involving sexual violence pending a review. There also appears to be a judicial review of the actions of the judge as well.

The feminist activism of Everyday Victim Blaming project is directly responsible for this outcome. They lobbied for the national press to notice this miscarriage of justice. They started the petition at change.org and it was supporters of EVB who complained to the Attorney General and CPS. This is a victory for feminism, not that you would notice in the mainstream press who are busy congratulating themselves and David Cameron for doing absolutely nothing.

Jewly Hight's Right By Her Roots: Americana Women and Their Songs

Posted on 09:54 by Unknown

The problem with this book is that it is just one book. It should be nine separate books: the eight singer-songwriters that Hight adores so much:
  • Lucinda Williams
  • Julie Miller
  • Victoria Williams
  • Michelle Shocked
  • Mary Gauthier
  • Ruthie Foster
  • Elizabeth Cook
  • Abigail Washburn
And, Jewly Hight herself; because Hight might claim to be writing the stories of these eight women singers-songwriters and their examination of "their geographical, cultural, familial, and religious roots in their music" but Hight's actually written herself into the text. I want to know more about the 8 female artists and Hight.  A longer book would have allowed the inclusion of more of the lyrics by these talented women but also more of Hight herself. Right by Her Roots is a love affair with these talented women singer-songwriters and it's love-affair that just isn't long enough.

It's all fascinating but at 200 pages, there simply isn't enough space to really examine these issues and fully explore the back catalogues of the music of these women. I want to know more about all 8 women but equally I want to know about Hight. I want to know about how Hight traces her roots and I want more of Hight's personal responses to these women.

I definitely recommend this book but with fingers crossed that Hight writes more in-depth books about these women (and herself).

Nick Cave is a Better Feminist than Feminists

Posted on 01:47 by Unknown

Obviously, the Nick Cave is a better feminists than feminists theory has been around for a while. He was blithering on about it in an interview in New York Mag in 2010. This is the full quote:
You write a lot about sexual neurosis, which has gotten you into some trouble. Do you consider yourself a feminist?
Well, I don’t consider myself not one. I’m not a misogynist, so you can dispense with that. I think I’ve done wonders for the feminist movement. I get criticized for a lot of what I write about, but as far as I’m concerned I’m actually standing up and having a look at what goes on in the minds of men, and I have the authority to talk about it because I’m a man. Women don’t have the authority because they don’t know what goes on in a man’s head, so largely what they say is kind of irrelevant. My songs and stories and books are character-driven, they talk about the way people are and the way men are and women are. I’m actually confronting certain issues that some women appear to feel are now redundant.
Bless his little socks. What we think about what goes on in men's heads is irrelevant. I'm glad he thinks that because he won't like what I'm thinking right now. And, I'm sure he understands that I know what he thinks about women is complete twaddle: sexist twaddle at that. I do like the arrogance of Cave's being able to understand what women "are" when women are too incapable of understanding men.

Yep, nothing inherently problematic or anti-feminist with that piece of nincompoopery at all.

And, now, Cave has an awesome new album cover to prove his feminist credentials. One which does not objectify women's bodies in any way. After all, it's totally normal for men to be fully clothed whilst women are naked. And, it's totally normal for the man to be clearly ordering the woman from the room whilst the woman looks ashamed. Covering her face and breasts while displaying her vulva just looks pretty. Or, something.

Normally, this kind of crap bypasses me. I only came across it via Media through a Feminist Lens. I've read a huge chunk of the discussion of this album cover on Nick Cave's FB wall and all I can say is that is full of dingbats and nincompoops. This, however, is the best 'how to miss the point completely comment' by one of his fans on his FB wall:
"How about waiting to listen to the album BEFORE you decide the image is offensive?"
Honestly, I had to read it about six times before I actually got that the quote was as dim as I thought. I had no idea my listening skills were required to analyse an image.

You learn something new everyday.

[I am aware that the image is that of Cave's wife. I think that makes it creepier personally but it's the construction of clothed, powerful man and naked, shamed woman which I find so utterly Patriarchal and unpleasant.]

Beth Jeans Houghton: Brilliant Musician, Shame About the Album Cover

Posted on 13:53 by Unknown
I discovered Beth Jeans Houghton a couple of months ago when trying to find music by women that wasn't misogynistic twaddle for an International Women's Day playlist for my teenager. I love Houghton's music but every time her CD cover shows up on the front of my iPod I cringe. It's a naked woman, which I assume is Houghton but I don't actually know for sure, with a lion's head. Now, it's a pretty powerful image but mostly because she seems to be missing a vulva. So, on top of the normal issues of objectification and the pornographication of the female body, they now don't have vulvas. Because, obviously, naked breasts aren't a problem, nor is a woman's body with no hair but a vulva is just wrong. Or, something.

I find the increasing sexualisation and pornographication of young female artists depressing. We are all familiar with the Rolling Stones cover of Britney Spears making her change from "teen star" to music/porn star but this isn't just confined to women performing within the "pop" industry. Gwen Stefani and Beyonce both wrote brilliant songs about being women, sexism and power relations whilst performing in groups but the music they have released as solo artists has just reinforced the same old misogynistic twaddle. It is at the point where a female artist can only be taken seriously if they are half-naked and gyrating on a pole. Just look at Shakira's early music in Spanish and her transition to an English-language artist. It's soul-destroying. Or, Katy Perry whose music is marketed at young teenagers but is only about servicing male sexual desires.

Houghton writes great music and her lyrics are brilliant and sublime. The use of her body as a sale tactic is just another facet of the misogyny inherent in the music industry. Now, I'm fairly sure Houghton was involved in developing the image used. I doubt very much the image was something required by her record company since Houghton doesn't strike me as the kind of artist who would do as she was told in order to play her music. It's just a shame that her body is the object discussed rather than her music which is brilliant [and everyone should buy it].

Plus, she should go on a proper tour so I can see her play live.
