Eat Battery Farmed Chickens and Save Women: Challenging PETA's Reinforcement of Rape Culture

Posted on 08:12 by Unknown

I know that this flies in the face of common sense and compassion but bear with me here. PETA’s campaigns are based on the idea that the objectification, sexualisation, and torture of women's bodies are a great way to raise awareness of animal rights. They glamorise, romanticise and eroticise Violence against Women because they refuse to either acknowledge the construction of “woman as object” within the Patriarchy, or take responsibility for the harm they cause to women by their campaigns. PETA usually uses the bodies of young, thin, blonde, white women as a canvas for their protest. Whilst their protests garner public attention, it isn’t because people are interested in animal rights. PETA have become a spectacle; their message lost in medium of their protest. PETA also seem to have completely forgotten what exactly they have been campaigning for and instead have become obsessed with out-porning the porn industry in their objectification of tortured women’s bodies.

PETA’s newest campaign is called “Fur Trim is Unattractive” and it has been getting considerable amount of press for both the level of misogyny and the generalised nincompoopery within it. It isn’t a new campaign though. It is yet another recycled campaign designed to shock; despite being neither original nor interesting. It's the normal "women with pubic hair are unfuckable" motif, as evidenced by the entire porn industry. One would have thought that an organisation who campaigns against the cosmetic industry's animal testing practises might be aware of the links between pornography, the fashion-beauty complex, and the unnecessary torture of animals. One would be wrong. The very last thing PETA is, is self-aware. Nor do they care that they are supposedly campaigning to prevent the torture of animals by financially profiting from the torturing the bodies of vulnerable women in porn.

Whilst it is undoubtedly unpleasant, the “Fur is Unattractive” campaign is actually rather tame for PETA. Over the past few years, their campaigns and street protests have become increasingly violent and quite deliberate in their use of Violence against Women. They are no longer content with using the bodies of naked women or even carving up women’s bodies as if we were meat. This year alone they have had one advertisement, developed for the Superbowl, banned for having women simulate sex with vegetables; an ad which was only marginally less offensive from Voina’s ‘protest’ art involving women having sex with frozen chickens. Their second ad campaign this year, entitled ‘Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom out of Me’, should have been called An Ode to Violence Against Women: The Romance Period. It features a physically and sexually assaulted woman wearing a neck brace and covered in bruises because her boyfriend, newly vegan, has pounded her in every way possible. Apparently some of the unfortunate consequences of veganism and the subsequent “mind-blowing intercourse” are “sex injuries such as whiplash, pulled muscles, rug burn, and even a dislocated hip.” That isn't sex. It is rape.

A third campaign developed this year to celebrate World Vegan Day involves a large number of men gyrating, in increasingly more violent ways, with vegetables in place of their penis. Surprisingly, nothing makes me want to give up bacon like a Dude with a cucumber for a penis, or so I'm lead to believe. I'm not entirely sure what PETA was aiming for with this but this is pretty much the definition of creepy:

“A cucumber has never looked so good – or so wicked. In honour of World Vegan Day, watch this spicy video that gives a wink to the sexual health benefits of going vegan by showcasing men enthusiastically and proudly showing off some healthy protrusions from their trousers.”
PETA have pretty much become a parody of themselves. It would be amusing if it weren't for their constant perpetuation and perpetration of rape culture.

So, I say we start eating battery-farmed chickens to raise awareness of the objectification, sexualisation and torture of women's bodies. After all, PETA doesn't care how it raises awareness or who funds its campaigns, so why should feminists? PETA have gone so far as to develop their own porn channel to supposedly raise awareness of the abuse of animals. You don't see feminist groups raising funds by offering to kill rabbits live on the web; perhaps we should.

I believe PETA's advertising campaigns buy into the hyper-sexualised and hyper-masculinised culture in which women are treated as no more than Patriarchal fucktoys. PETA support, perpetuate, and perpetrate rape culture.

So, if PETA wants to reduce the discourse on animal cruelty to simply objectifying women as an advertising tool and encouraging rape culture, I'm going to start buying battery-farmed chickens.

I love my Mooncup

Posted on 04:50 by Unknown

My lovely friend FrothyDragon* has been ranting about the misogynistic twaddle which are the Always "Have a Happy Period" ads here. I hate them. I hate them a lot. I have ranted about my hatred of them here. I have been desperately pretending they don't exist but the freaking campaign never stops. It's like Boots. They've found some misogynistic drivel that they think works and keep using it. But, it ain't working here anymore. The only thing these stupid ads have done is convince me to buy a mooncup and I love my mooncup. It isn't perfect and there is an unfortunate squelching noise; a really unfortunate squelching noise. But, buying a mooncup means never having to financially support the nincompoops at Always and the dingbats at the advertising company they hired which can only be a good thing.

I also have some washable pads that I bought from here. I have some pink camouflage ones which make me smile. It's the only time pink camouflage is ever a good look. On anyone. I'm not quite at the stage where I think rinsing menstrual blood out of pads is a powerful testament to sisterhood but I love that it makes my friend feel strong. And, it is a powerful way of telling the Patriarchy to Fuck Off.

*If you haven't clicked the link to Frothy's blog, do so now.

Misogynisitic Advertising Walk of Shame: PETA Redux

Posted on 05:30 by Unknown

I bet everyone's shocked to read that PETA have yet another misogynistic advertising campaign out: this time featuring domestic violence. I know I was. After all, PETA have such a great history of working for the end to animal testing of make-up and preventing animal abuse within the mass farming industry without engaging in any kind of misogynistic nincompoopery. Or, erm, something like that anyway.

I genuinely don't get how anyone with an ounce of empathy can take these misogynistic arseholes seriously. Make no mistake, PETA is a deeply misogynistic organisation. This isn't them being sexist because we live in a patriarchal society and they don't have the critical thinking skills to see they harm they are doing. PETA actively campaign for animal rights by romanticising and eroticising violence against women. They did it with their banned Superbowl ad featuring women having sex with vegetables [which they ripped off from the misogynists of Voina before they came up with Pussy Riot] and they did it by carving Pamela Anderson into a piece of meat. Their comparisons with slavery are crass and the use of the Holocaust to make a point just vile but criticism of the hurt caused by their campaigns has never stopped PETA. If anything, their level of violent, abusive nincompoopery has served only to encourage stupid celebrity after stupid celebrity to join them, proving once again that the best way to be famous is to be an arsehole. There is a PETITION HERE. This is the text of the petition:PETA launched a new campaign encouraging people to go Vegan by promoting violence against women. Violence in any form is never okay. In its latest ploy to correlate being vegan with sex, PETA has over stepped every line in a campaign that would make anyone cringe. The campaign is called: BWVAKTBOOM: "Boyfriend Went Vegan and Knocked the Bottom out of Me." Appropriately titled for a series of advertisements that not only display [without any trigger warnings], but highlight and romanticize sexual violence against women. In its latest ad, PETA portrays a disheveled and physically & sexually battered woman who is the “latest victim” of a boyfriend who went vegan and then “knocked the bottom out of her”. She is seen with bruises all over her body and even has to wear a neck-brace. PETA further proves its ignorance around violence against women by boasting a new website for the BWVAKTBOOM campaign where videos can be readily viewed, and there is a [intended-to-be] humorous “call” to prevent BWVAKTBOOM-related injuries. Violent messages are sent, such as: “For years, women have been open to the physical, emotional, and karmic benefits of veganism. But now, more and more men are discovering the perks of a plant-based diet. More specifically, a dramatic increase in their wang power and sexual stamina. Unfortunately, the consequences of all this mind-blowing intercourse can often lead to sex injuries such as whiplash, pulled muscles, rug burn, and even a dislocated hip.” PETA has clearly overlooked any regard for survivors of sexual and domestic violence in this new campaign, while making a mockery out of the seriousness of violence against women. In taking a stand that there is NEVER an excuse to promote or diminish the real-life impact of violence, I demand the full termination of the BWVAKTBOOM campaign.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Jean Paul Gaultier Does Diet Coke

Posted on 06:31 by Unknown

Jean Paul Gaultier is designing limited edition Diet Coke bottles. Because, obviously, Diet Coke has run out of ideas on misogynistic advertising and has gone the desperate route of  paying a fashion designer to paint their bottles. After all, it is so uber-cool to show a man's face on a women's body. That isn't at all creepy:

And, there is nothing weird at all about painting the naked body of model Daisy Lowe to look like a beverage:

Oh, look the launch features burlesque and the women as Barbie dolls trope. Gosh, that's ultra exciting and has totally never, ever been done before:

This isn't the first campaign Gaultier has designed for Diet Coke. He is also responsible for the creepy doll commercials. That would be the campaign which officially stopped me drinking Diet Coke. Because, they were creepy and not in a Chuckie kind of way but in a porny, women are nothing more than fucktoys kind of way. I have to say I was not aware he was also responsible for this shite but it doesn't really surprise me. After all, the fashion industry is noted for its general hatred of women.
Diet Coke have done this before. This was the effort of  Karl Lagerfield, the quintessential misogynist who is forever labelling women fat and therefore unfuckable:
Would it be too much to ask for a product aimed at women not to be women-hating bullshit designed to make us all feel like failures in the Patriarchal Fuckability Test? Really?

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Estee Lauder

Posted on 01:21 by Unknown

Sophie Barnes has already written an excellent critique of the unrelenting stupidity and just all around arrogance of this product in the New Statesman. Estee Lauder's new Advanced Night Repair comes with the tagline: "The revolutionary repair formulas millions of women can't live without." As Barnes says:
Turns out the one thing that women require as a basic need the world over is anti-aging cream. No, not clean running water or access to electricity. Not even the oxygen we breathe is as crucial or as life-sustaining as holding off those wrinkles, ladies. This isn't just that we'd quite like healthy, younger-looking skin - no, it's not that flippant. We NEED a youthful, bouncy complexion - our very lives depend on it.
Who knew? Women could actually die from having wrinkles. I'm so glad Estee Lauder has brought this to my attention. Now, I know the secret to eternal life is some over-priced anti-aging cream. All those centuries alchemists spent looking for the Philosopher's stone trying to turn base metals into gold and live forever were wasted. All we need is some anti-aging cream because being old is, well, practically a crime. Next thing, women with wrinkles will be imprisoned for failing the Patriarchal Fuckability Test.

So, I'm adding Estee Lauder to the boycott list for being offensive, stupid and totally lacking in an understanding of the real problems we face as humans.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Eurostar's Tedious Twaddle

Posted on 04:16 by Unknown
These are some of Eurostar's Post-Olympic ads which "invite customers to bring a little something back" with them. Granted, these aren't quite as horrific as the MyCheck ad starring Bar Rafaeli but they are so utterly tedious with the monotonous sexism. The second one definitely comes with an undercurrent of slut-shaming; just to be extra exciting.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: The Victoria Secrets Barcode Puzzle Box

Posted on 10:49 by Unknown
So, I'm way behind the times on these ads since they apparently date back to the summer of 2011. They have, however, just appeared in my FB news feed via Any-Body, who are an organisation well worth following. These ads are so disturbing that I'm not quite sure where to start. Victoria's Secret having been pushing the boundaries of television and advertising for several years now making the sexualisation and objectification of women's bodies mainstream in a way Hugh Hefner tried but didn't quite get. They used to air the annual Victoria Secrets Fashion show on TV in the US; a program full of nearly nude women with angel wings conflating sexuality with religious iconography. I have no idea if they still do and I really don't want to google it to find out.

These interactive billboards bring Victoria Secret's misogyny to a whole new level. Granted we all know that if you click on the bar code, the pictures of the model sent to your phone won't actually be naked [although it won't be long before the violent pornographers join in with this] but the idea itself is just horrific. It further reduces women's bodies into parts for titillation. Its the 21st century version of the peep show on a bus stop for small children. That way we indoctrinate boys into believing women are nothing but fucktoys and teach girls they have no value except as fucktoys.

The fact that women's bodies are a game, a puzzle to be solved in the view of children demonstrates just how little value we have.

The fact that these ads, which are pornographic, are in the view of children and children are invited to play the game shows how little respect we have for our children. Instead of allowing them to grow up and discover their sexuality safely, we have constructed and constrained sexuality. We have narrowed it to women as object; men as subject.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Sheba. You Know, The Cat Food.

Posted on 14:24 by Unknown
First of all, Eva Longoria should NOT be dancing in a cat food commercial. She's a talented actress and this is a pile of misogynistic pooh. But, seriously, who thought this up? She's basically doing a strip tease for her cat. I mean, I love my cat but I don't strip for her as a pre-dinner show. She's a cat. She just wants to eat. At no point, did she sign up for a lap dance. But, hey, if we can't objectify women's bodies during a cat food commercial, when can we?

Welcome to the Patriarchy: where even cats deserve the right to objectify and dehumanise the bodies of women.

Misogynistic Walk of Shame: Hooters. And, Not Just for the Name.

Posted on 01:24 by Unknown
This is the bit where I admit to reading Jezebel; a magazine which claims to be feminist whilst writing some of the most misogynistic, anti-woman twaddle I've had the misfortune to read. If you don't believe me, look at their posts on breastfeeding or any post on celebrities. In between the gobsmackingly sexist posts about women, Jezebel manages to produce some utterly brilliant rants about body image, patriarchal fuckability, and stupid arsewipe advertisers. So, I have to give them props for their rant on this piece of misogynistic arsehattery:

The entire ad is about how fat, ugly and utterly unfuckable most women are; cause that isn't offensive or misogynistic at all. Apparently, the only subhumans with vaginas who are even remotely fuckable are "girls". I do wish people would actually read Nabokov's Lolita and realise it's about the rape of a child and not some guide to fucking barely legal 18 year olds. [I'm also fairly creeped out by 40 year old men wanting to fuck 18 year olds. Just gross. Really, really gross].

Hooters remains the quintessential example of the normalisation of the objectification and pornographication of women's bodies. FFS, Hooters is classed as a "family restaurant" and not  a sex entertainment venue. You can have your child's birthday there. Granted, you have to be a pretty piss-poor parent with some serious common sense problems to think that a venue featuring half-naked women being objectified is a good place to go for chicken wings. But, lots of parents do this and, in doing so, help perpetuate rape culture. So, I'm going to be loud and proud about my judgy pants here: If you take your kid to Hooters, you really do need some basic critical thinking skills and parenting classes to boot.

I can't possibly improve on this rant in Jezebel:
This commercial is just a stank bundle of cheap, hacky, antique jokes that prop up the patently damaging notion that women's societal value declines drastically with every cellulite dimple. Oh, thanks, guys. Thanks a lot. Now that I'm too embarrassed to go to the pool and exercise because some dickhead lifeguard and the voices in his head are going to be horking over my body, I guess I'll just cloak my shame in sweatpants and gorge on fried chicken all night!
So, what they said and I'm adding Hooters to my Misogynistic Walk of Shame Boycott. [Not that I have ever eaten there. Obviously.]

Oh, and in case you are clinically stupid and wanted to pretend that that was a one-off example of extreme misogyny by Hooters, here's another ad charmingly entitled More than a Mouthful.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: @BittyLabs "Reclaim Your Wife" Awfulness

Posted on 14:25 by Unknown

It's a company that sells baby bottles by telling men that women's breast belong to men. Because, God forbid, a woman use her breasts to feed her child. You know, like every other freaking mammal does. Nope, even in the first few precious months [or years!] women are expected to remain nothing more than fucktoys for their husbands. It's the one time in your life that you should feel proud and beautiful about your body which gestated a child for 40 odd weeks and then birthed that baby. No women should be made to feel worthless for not passing the Patriarchal Fuckability Test but targeting a new mother is just pathetic.

Alright, it was "just" a twitter campaign, but, come on, who actually thinks this shit is appropriate? Who thinks men are this stupid? And, if you do happen to run into a man who thinks this is funny, you probably shouldn't be reproducing with him. Jealous, infantile arsewipes do not make good men. Nor do they make good fathers. I can pretty much guarantee you any man that finds this funny will be out the door within a few years, won't pay any maintenance but will feel the need to ruin your child's life by pissing about with access visits.

These are the actual tweets Bitty Labs sent out:

New Baby? Reclaim Your wife. Meet BARE.

Feeling like you're competing with your newborn for mommy's attention? Meet BARE

Just in case you've missed the obvious "women are nothing more than fucktoys" reference in the first tweet, they conveniently sent out a second one to appeal to that subsection of extremely stupid arsewipes. This is such an epic social media failure that I genuinely can't get up the energy to email them to complain. Anyone who can tweet this wouldn't be bright enough to understand my critique of the capitalist-patriarchal anti-woman bullshit they are propogating.

So,they've made a half-hearted attempt at an apology but, let's face it, this is still a piece of misogynistic twaddle:

Ladies, We’re really sorry about the twitter campaign run last week. It was a huge miss understood [sic] and resulted in offensive messages. It was taken down yesterday. The messages had nothing to do with putting a husband needs before the baby’s needs, it was more about having a little extra time for the rest of the family. Obviously the whole campaign was poorly executed. We apologize deeply for this miss understanding and assure you, from now on the campaigns will be closely monitored before they go out. Thank you for a second chance.
Really, if you aren't going to bother apologising properly, there's really no point in bothering. It just makes you look like an even bigger nincompoop.

Oh, and not to put to fine a point on it, but the name Bitty Lab itself is pretty much the definition of misogynistic nastiness.

The Lorax: Interesting Environmental Message Served With a Side of Sexism

Posted on 02:24 by Unknown

I took small to see The Muppet Movie; an experience which was ruined by the inclusion of the utterly misogynistic Aquafresh Nurdle World ad. And, then we saw an add for the new Dr. Seuss film The Lorax. It looks brilliant fun; a film about being yourself, questioning authority and respecting/ caring for the environment. That would be brilliant fun right up until the point where there was a lurvely 'joke' about gender and violence.

It was the same tired old joke about not threatening violence against women unless they don't 'look' like women: that is too say fat. Because, it's just totally okay for children's films to reinforce the same tired old stereotypes about women only having value if they are skinny and pretty. Or, that women can only 'look' like women if they are skinny. Or something.

It would be nice if just one film directed at children didn't include threats of violence and gender stereotyping. Is that really so much to ask? Is Hollywood so lacking in imagination that they can't imagine a world where people don't run about threatening to punch anyone who disagrees with them or denigrating those who don't fit Patriarchal Constructions of Fuckability?

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: The Continuing Nincompoopery of PETA [TRIGGER WARNING]

Posted on 23:33 by Unknown
I've always thought that PETA were a bunch of misogynistic nincompoops too stupid to understand that a person can care about the abuse and torture of animals without objectifying and torturing the bodies of women. This image of Pamela Anderson exemplifies everything that is wrong with them; and it's not even the most misogynistic image they've ever come up with:

Every time I see a new PETA advertisement, I think they can't possibly be anymore misogynistic or hypocritical (see Naomi Campbell and the "I'd rather be Naked than Wear Fur campaign). I am consistently wrong. PETA gave up all pretence of humanity when they decided to launch a porn channel in order to raise awareness of animal rights. Because torturing rabbits to test eye make up is more important than the rape and torture of women's bodies. Here's a hint: no one should be testing mascara on rabbits. It's torture. Double anal penetration of a woman's body: also torture. PETA are the quintessential misogynistic hypocrites with no redeeming features.

Yet, again, I was wrong in the PETA can't get any worse stakes. I came across the link to PETA' Superbowl misogynistic bollocks on a Mumsnet thread. I genuinely can't articulate just how offensive, vile and stupid the [thankfully banned] ad was. Simulating sex with vegetables in order to make vegetarianism look cool is really just pathetic and sad. And horrible and misogynistic. What kind of person converts to vegetarianism after seeing a woman faking an orgasm on a piece of broccoli? Is the animal rights movement so devoid of intelligent members that they have to trawl for support from the clinically stupid? Or, do PETA just not care that their ads are targeted at the sexually inadequate or hypocrites like Naomi Campbell?

I do not buy any beauty products which are tested on animals, including soaps and shampoos. I believe ALL animal testing should be illegal and people who wear fur as a fashion choice are dingbats [although, I do exclude here communities like the Inuit who eat, use, and wear all products from animals they hunt]. I do not believe in any factory-farming or battery caged hens and I do believe that the European/ North American & South American diets are far too dependent on meat which is part of the cause of famines in other areas of the world. I believe everyone reducing their meat intake to no more than once a week while have the benefit of increasing sustainable food production for all. I believe in this despite PETA's best efforts to the contrary.

I believe PETA's advertising campaigns buy into the hyper-sexualised and hyper-masculinity culture in which women are treated as no more than Patriarchal fucktoys. PETA support, perpetuate and perpetrate rape culture.

I do wonder how many people PETA put off the animal rights movement with their misogyny? And, how many have joined their cause because it reinforces the construction of women as sub-human?

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Domino's Pizza Now Served with a Rape Joke

Posted on 00:05 by Unknown

Rape jokes are never funny; unless you're a rapist. Rape jokes simply continue to perpetuate our rape culture. It doesn't matter if you aren't a rapist. If you laugh at a rape joke, you are telling a rapist that rape is okay. That rape is funny and totally normal. Like pornography, and to seriously badly paraphrase a famous feminist quote, laughing at rape jokes is the theory and rape is the practise. This blog is precisely why rape jokes are harmful and the comedians who make them are just stupid, vile misogynists.

So, I'm adding Dominoes to the Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame for their "No is the New Yes" campaign for their new range of "artisan pizzas" [which in and of itself is a pretty stupid campaign for multi-national fast food company]. Using a very well-known anti-rape campaign to sell pizzas is just fucking despicable. Dominoes and the advertising company they hired should be ashamed of themselves. They can not undo the harm they have caused by approving this campaign and I, for one, will be boycotting them. Permanently.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Aquafresh's Stupid Fecking Nurdle World

Posted on 23:37 by Unknown
I took Small [aka my youngest child] to see Stockholm Syndrome: The Movie [aka Disney's Beauty and the Beast] the other day. It was pissing with rain. We have run out of soft plays, swimming pools and museums to visit with the several thousand other families struggling to entertain small children during school holidays when it hasn't stopped raining. In what feels like forever. So, I'm making excuses for taking her to see a Disney Princess film. She likes them and it gives me a chance to rant about them. I think my objections to Beauty and the Beast are the routine feminist critiques: violent, abusive man who "heals" through the loving, kindness of a beautiful, sweet woman. Even better, Belle can read. And, she turns down a proposal from the village violent abuser to marry the rich abusive prince. Cus, that's a good thing right, especially if you ignore the subtext of rape throughout most of the first half of the movie? #facepalm

As if it weren't bad enough sitting through the twaddle of Beauty and the Beast, I also had to sit through Aquafresh's oh so subtle attempts at marketing toothpaste to children via the pretence of being educational. It's a short "film" called Nurdle World. It was patronising and the actress hosting it was, frankly, appalling. Really, the whole thing was appalling. But, they surpassed the appalling shit with their reinforcing of some seriously stupid, offensive and damaging stereotypes. Turns out, girls talk too much and boys are cool because they solve problems and fly spaceships. But girls, they just talk too much and do nothing. Just like Disney Princesses who have to be rescued constantly from "real men", Nurdle World girls [and sisters in real life] just sit around yakking and missing out on all the fun.

Just how fucking stupid was the marketing team that came up with this patronising shit? We are so boycotting Aquafresh now.

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Sweetie Gets a Manicure

Posted on 12:38 by Unknown
So, we were driving down the road and lo and behold we pass advertising on a lamppost with the lovely image of Sweetie leaving a manicurist. Sweetie the fucking Panda gets a manicure. You know, that panda which the BBC named as one of the most important (women's) Faces of 2011 "accidentally" leaving out three women who won the Nobel fucking Peace Prize. So, not only do real women not make the BBC's list of important newsmakers of 2011 (and Pippa Middleton was nominated for being the most sexually harassed women in April) but we now require female pandas conform to the Patriarchal Fuckability Test. And, advertise manicures. She's a fucking panda; an endangered species. I think Sweetie's got enough to worry about with half of the UK watching her reproductive parts to worry about whether or not her nails look good. Plus, her name is Sweetie.

Oh, and for those interested, the three women who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 were Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymay Gbowee, and Tawakkol Karman. They won "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work." Slightly more important than a panda.

Girls In Science: How to Patronise and Offend in 45 Seconds.

Posted on 12:01 by Unknown
This is an EU Initiative to encourage girls into science. Its' a video involving 18 year old models in skintight clothing, wearing ridiculous shoes, crawling about on their bellies for a tube of lipstick. Because nothing says science more than sexualising a bunch of teenagers and making them look desperate for lipstick: the one thing guaranteed to bring them wealth, success and happiness.

It's just all kinds of awful. It's the kind of campaign one would expect from 14 year old boys who have never had a date. Or, a stupid misogynist who actively hates women and doesn't think women can be scientists. Because there is no excuse for this level of misogyny to be made by an organisation who are charged with breaking gendered stereotypes. All this does is reinforce the same patriarchal bullshit which assumes that women are nothing unless they are fuckable; even if they are geniuses like Rosalind Franklin [DNA and who was not awarded the Nobel Prize because she passed away several months before the ceremony], Marie Curie [the first person - and not just one with a vagina - to be awarded two Nobel prizes in chemistry and physics] or, you know, every freaking woman on the planet [and in space] currently working with the field of science in physics, chemistry, archaeology, paleo-bottany, AIDS research and on and on and on and on and so forth.

I do like the inclusion of the fuck me heels: you know the ones which cause exactly the same damage to women's feet as the [now banned] practise of Chinese footbinding. An activity roundly condemned for its misogyny and the actual physical, debilitating harm it caused women. But, now, roundly hailed as a sign of a really fuckable woman in "Western culture". Because nothing says "fuck me" like deliberately physically destroying one's body for the pleasure of someone else.

I could complain all day about the minutiae of this video but, instead, I think everyone needs to watch the Unofficial Response To EU Misogyny: Because It's Brilliant.

Also, this video is so clearly an example of cultural femicide. So much so, that I expect the Girl Guides will be writing snotty letters to the EU next week.

Have to add this because it's genius: This is what a Scientist Looks Like

Hilariously, the original video link has been removed from Youtube. I'm guessing because of all the negative comments underneath so this is a new link.

FemFresh: Got to love a Feminist Smackdown

Posted on 12:56 by Unknown

I do love a Feminst smackdown. There is nothing like a full on Feminist smackdown of Patriarchal arse-hattery. And, the Feminist smackdown of Femfresh is just genius. And, do they deserve it. Not just for selling a product which labels women's bodies disgusting and smelly for being real but for the total inability to use the actual NAME for those body parts. Because vagina and vulva are such horribly dirty things that even their name is tainted by their disgustingness. I wouldn't have linked the FB page except the comments by Feminists are freaking hilarious.

These are some of the blogs I've been reading :

Misogynistic Advertising Walk of Shame: Tampax Pearl's Mother Nature Twaddle

Posted on 20:39 by Unknown
There's a whole stack of these stupid, misogynistic ads where "Mother Nature" tries to punish women with their periods for DARING to have a social life. Thankfully, Tampax, the Great Feminist Hero, is on hand to humiliate Mother Nature with their "pearls". Because, obviously, without Tampax no woman could possibly ever go out in public for fear of accidentally spilling some menstrual blood and possibly poisoning every man in their vicinity.

I can't even describe how angry the whole "Mother Nature as an evil bitch who hates women" theme makes me. That's patriarchal arsehattery at its finest. Making a natural part of women's lives bad and yucky and then blaming it on a woman. Because women need to be punished with their periods. Or, protected from them or something else that's all kinds of stupid.

Boycotting this shit too.

Bring on the Matriarchal Revolution by reclaiming our bodies and our mooncups [or washable linens].
